Kathy Dix surrounded by daughters & nieces! |
Director
Kathy
Dix began her love for the outdoors enjoying family summers in the
north woods of Lake Superior as a child and continuing the tradition as
a parent. As a teenager and young adult, she attended Camp Kamaji as a
camper and staff. Kathy has run an entrepreneurial family business as
Director of Product Development and Marketing and has developed youth
programs in the Kansas City community, where her family lives.
The
Dix's two sons attended Camp Kooch-i-ching, where they too went through
the program as campers and stayed on as staff through college. Kathy
served on the Board of Directors of Kooch-i-ching during those years,
and was on Founders Committee for Ogichi Daa Kwe. She became the first
director of Ogichi in 2004 and participated in the inaugural canoe
trip. Kathy, with the help of her daughters and many talented staff,
have pioneered the Ogichi program to be the success it is today.
Staff
Ogichi's
staff is a diverse group, who is hired because of abilities to show
initiative, positive self-esteem, self-reliance and provide positive
role models for campers. Camper-staff ratio is 2.5 to 1. Staff attend a
ten day orientation, in which they participate in training covering
wilderness skills, safety, best practice teachings for female specific
needs and dynamics:
* Wilderness First Aid/CP
* American Red Cross Lifegaurd training
* Whitewater Rescue/Advanced Canoe Training through Univ. MN, Duluth
* Brea-in canoe trip
* Boundaries, bullying, Enneagram study of personalities
Our
staff come to us from across the country, bringing a variety of
expertise, innovative ideas and concepts to the program. In addition to
program and wilderness tripping staff, we have a full-time Assistant
Director, Melynda Roscoe, as well as a full-time nurse, cooks and a
maintenance guru.
